Milka Djordjevich generates perpetual motion for herself in order to transform, shapeshift and groove. As she self-perpetuates the dance, her incessant actions affect and direct her progression. She and the movement are in an incrementally constant dialogue in order to reveal to the various idiosyncrasies of the performing female body.

Knowing the Score: An Investigation of Improvisational Structures by Sarah Maxfield
Museum of Art and Design

Participating in this one-day, museum-wide event. Sarah Maxfield offers an improvisational score through which to investigate the use of scoring in dance and performance.  Maxfield has invited a number of consummate improvisers to participate in the investigation, and visitors to the museum are invited to participate in certain elements of the event as well.  The score will be available before the event, so that visitors may choose when and how to join in.  Participating artists include Ishmael Houston-Jones, Yvonne Meier, Ursula Eagly, Jen Rosenblit, and more.

Wednesdays, September 7 – September 28, 2011, 6:15 pm-8:15 pm
Movement Research at Eden’s Expressway, NYC
Open Movement Practice
I will lead an open level movement class drawing from elements of social, folk, and contemporary dance forms, as well as from ordinary action. Resisting the urge to transform ourselves into blank slates, we will abandon the term ‘neutral’ and uncover our bodies’ inherent knowledge and history. By using sensorial, perceptual, anatomical, spatial and imaginative pathways, we’ll amplify, morph and direct our individual movement patterning. We will play with technical structures, improvisational concepts, choreographic frameworks and performing. Class will allow us to continuously activate our bodies through space, while discovering the kinesthetic sensitivity of a dynamic body-in-motion.

Whitney Biennial NYC
Live on 5 Songs: Milka Djordjevich and Chris Peck
The Whitney Museum, Lobby Gallery
Choreographer Milka Djordjevich and composer Chris Peck imagine a reversal of the historical divide between music and dance in order to rediscover music as a practice of the body and dance as a mode of listening. A series of collaborative duets accumulate to form an experience in which dance and music become indistinguishable.

Martin Kersels: Live on 5 Songs
Martin Kersels‘s 5 Songs is a sculpture that has double life as a stage for performance. Designed with the idea that the performer needs to adapt to the surface and the materiality of the sculpture–and therefore never truly feels comfortable–5 Songs attempts to be an extension to any performer while at the same time being extended by any performer. Kersels has curated an eclectic mix of performances to take place on and around 5 Songs that occur throughout the duration of the Biennial.
